Chief Medical Officer

Reports To: Chief Executive Officer

Main Roles & Responsibilities

Reporting to the CEO and working closely with colleagues across the leadership team this role requires a qualified, European Community registered medical doctor with interests and expertise in oncology. You will be a significant contributor to the strategy for building the Company’s portfolio, enabling Carrick Therapeutics to become one of Europe’s leading commercial forces in the battle against cancer. Leading by example you will be the Company’s medical ‘pulse and filter’. In this role you will:

  • Develop the Medical Strategy: Provide the management, the Board and investors with an independent medical perspective on the clinical positioning and value of Carrick’s drug development portfolio, based on feedback from leading cancer scientists, medical oncologists, other research partners and commercial colleagues
  • Leadership of the Medical Function: Build Carrick’s in-house medical function, in line with Company growth projections, assisted initially by 2 MDs and one Clinical Project Manager. This will include responsibility for medical due diligence for potential asset acquisition, provision of medical information, clinical research and drug safety
  • Clinical Development: Primary responsibility for ensuring best medical practice and patient safety in aspects of Carrick’s clinical development programmes and processes, to include:
    • Ensuring that all activities undertaken by Carrick Therapeutics and its staff are conducted in the best interests of patients and based on available knowledge about the drug(s) under development
    • Overseeing standard operating procedures concerning the conduct of clinical trials, patient safety monitoring and adverse event reporting, in accordance with internationally accepted guidelines on Good Clinical Practice
    • Signing-off on all major documents required under Good Clinical Practice, including clinical study protocols & amendments, regulatory and ethics committee submissions
    • Ensuring that the medical teams responsible for conducting clinical trials with Carrick’s products working for Contact Research Organisations and other Trial Partners are qualified, well-informed about product profiles and suitably staffed and equipped to undertake the work assigned
    • Acting as Carrick’s final medical arbiter on all trial related matters
  • External Profile: Acting as the primary public medical face of Carrick, to include:
    • Managing enquiries from a range of groups including the scientific and healthcare communities, the media and the general public
    • Speaking at major conferences and international meetings such as the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, to maintain knowledge about cutting edge developments in oncology and to promote Carrick’s interests and reputation amongst the professions
    • Deputising for the CEO, as and when required
  • Internal Education and Leadership: Providing guidance, education and leadership to colleagues throughout Carrick to maintain high levels of awareness of major medical developments in the field, including breakthrough research and clinical practice

Position Requirements

The Chief Medical Officer should have a profile closely aligned to the following:

  • Current medical registration in the European Community accompanied by a higher medical qualification (e.g. PhD; FRCP, FRCPath or equivalent; MBA). Board Certification, or equivalent, in a relevant sub-specialty, would be advantageous
  • Industry experience gained within the commercial life sciences sector, ideally in the biopharmaceutical industry or a leading Contract Research Organisation
  • Previous experience in a CMO or Medical Director role in a comparable business would be extremely advantageous. Ideally this will combine experience of best practices from larger organisations with exposure to smaller, more entrepreneurial businesses
  • Previous experience in the development of new anti-cancer agents would be advantageous; either though clinical practice in hospital medicine or as a Therapeutic Head – Oncology in industry
  • Understanding of the various drug and non-drug approaches in the overall clinical management of cancer patients
  • Highly developed team working skills; an ability to lead through negotiation, influence and effective communication and the ability to engage others around common business goals
  • High energy, commitment and the willingness to align to the values of the business
  • A track record of people management and leadership will be advantageous
  • The ability to work closely with the CEO, in a symbiotic and mutually supportive fashion that plays to each other’s strengths
